Can You Identify?

Description:  Orange, Sandstock Brick.
Condition:  Very worn.
Type:  House Brick.
Frog:  Shallow, ill-defined frog.
Inscription:  Impressed crown.
Origin:  Unknown.
Current Location:  Ipswich Historical Society Collection.

NOTE:  Brick Maker Unknown.

Description:  Orange Brick with many impurities.
Condition:  Some minor crumbling.
Type:  House Brick.
Frog:  Large, square, angular frog with inscription and screw marks.
Inscription:  “MASONS”  “BANK” (raised).
Origin:  Hancocks Sawmill site, North Ipswich.
Current Location:  My Collection.

NOTE:  I haven’t been able to track down the company.

Description:  Dark-Brown, Sandy, Speckled Brick.
Condition:  Slight crumbling.
Type:  House Brick.
Frog:  Shallow, rectangular, angular frog.
Inscription:  Raised “W W”
Origin:  Woodend Area.
Current Location:  My Collection.

NOTE:  There are two possibilities of the maker at least: Worley & Whitehead or the two Welldons (father and son)..

Description:  Brown, Sandstock Brick.  Black blotches.
Condition:  Crumbling and with cracks.
Type:  House Brick.
Frog:  Narrow, rounded frog.
Inscription:  “J D W” (indented).
Origin:  Sandy Gallop, Churchill.

Note:  There were three brick-makers with the J.W. initials; Jack Wright, James Welldon & James Wyvill.  I do not have the middle name for any of them.

"Patent" Bricks

Description:  Pink Brick with Small Black Specs.
Condition:  Small fissures and crumbled edges.
Type:  House Brick
Frog:  Shallow, rectangular frog with rounded corners and inscription one side; none on the rear.
Inscription:  “PATENT” (indented).
Other Features:  Smeared mortar on most sides.
Origin:  Noblevale 3 Colliery site, Swanbank.

Description:  Dark-Coloured Brick with Small, Black Specs.
Condition:  One end broken off.
Type:  House Brick.
Frog:  Shallow, rectangular frog with rounded corners and inscription one side; none on rear.
Inscription:  “PATENT” (indented).
Other Features:  Smeared mortar on some sides.
Origin:  Retaining wall of old 1887 shop, Blackstone Rd, Blackstone. (See Right)

To the left is the more typical inscription on a similar frog design.  It refers to the company in England that since the early 1800s was manufacturing patented brick presses.  Occasionally the local producer’s inscription was on the reverse side.  It is a mystery why the ‘Clayton’ inscription is absent whilst the ‘Patent’ one remains.
