FEENEY HISTORY
Mervin Feeney (1914-2003) was born in Marburg, near Ipswich, Queensland.
In 1931 he began as an apprentice thrower with John Ramsey. In 1938, after the closure of Ramsey’s pottery he spent a little over a year with Stones Pottery at Coorparoo, then about two years with Rylance Refractories at Dinmore. In 1951 Feeney purchased the run-down and disused Ramsey & Son pottery works in Bundamba.
In 1956 he reopened the pottery and production recommenced. In 1976 the pottery works were relocated to Wulkuraka, 10 kilometres west of Ipswich, under the name of ‘J.T. Sandison & Co.’. Mervin’s son, Mervin John Feeney, was managing director. In 2005 the works were closed and a clay processing plant opened at Tiger Street, West Ipswich, under the new ownership of Walker Ceramics and managed by Steve Vanderkyl; formerly of the Wulkuraka Plant. This arrangement continues to the present day.
